LED ZEPPELIN - CANDY STORE ROCK

'Ooh baby baby, don'tcha wanna fella like me?'

Angry, pissed off and wiggling inside his cast, Robert Plant finally fulfils his Ral Donner dreams.

Recorded for and released on Presence, Candy Store Rock is a remarkable song. Intense, complex yet able to swing, duck and dive while evoking the spirit of 50's rock 'n' roll and rockabilly.

Recorded in that short, angry burst of adrenaline following Robrt's accident, the balance of the song is a wonderful mix of 50's Sun Studios sound and the raw edge of Jimmy's guitar army screaming and fist pumping.

Heavily treated with echo, Jimmy's signature intro riff plays perfectly against Bonzo's syncopation. It's a very authentic sound, Jimmy using his production experience to create the right mood, the right amount of ambience. It has a feel of a Dazed And Confused or Whole Lotta Love rhythm exercise. When the riff and beat swaps at 1.52 it's a moment of magic.

Picked as the first US Single, coupled with Royal Orleans, on Swan Song SS 70110, it achieved little success. There are also (of course) various 7" releases from around the globe, from Italy to Greece, Portugal to Japan, sometimes swapping the a and b-sides round. Putting the two shortest, possibly most potent tracks from Presence out together was certainly a statement.
Never performed live, it was a played on this July 7th 2001 by Page & Plant at the Stravinsky Theatre,Montreux, Switzerland as part of their set commemorating Sun Records legacy. A perfect tribute, passing the flame through song, and a great version too!
